Egg Donor FAQs
Below are listed the most frequently asked questions by women who are interested in participating in our program as an Egg Donor. Read more about our Egg Donation program.
When will the intended parents know if they have a successful pregnancy?
The intended parents will typically take a pregnancy test 12 to 14 days after the embryo transfer date.
When do the intended parents receive the eggs from me?
The embryology lab receives the eggs immediately after your retrieval, and they are typically fertilized within two to four days before the transfer to the intended parent.
What is the time frame to complete a donor cycle?
The stimulated cycle only takes about three weeks. Check out our egg donor timeline for more information!
How long does it take to be tested, before I know I passed?
Once you are selected by intended parents, the medical and psychological screening process begins. This testing period typically takes approximately three to five weeks to complete before the donation cycle starts.
How many times can I be a donor?
The number of times you can participate in egg donation is a personal decision made in consultation with your IVF doctor. On average, women donate between one and five times in their lifetime.
When will I get my next period?
Your period will generally start 10-12 days after the retrieval.
When can I resume sexual intercourse?
You will need to wait at least a week after the retrieval, preferably after your period starts.
Can the donor have intercourse during the stimulated cycle?
Creative Conception and your IVF doctor will provide specific guidelines. It is often recommended to abstain from intercourse throughout the cycle to prevent an unintended high-risk pregnancy and for your comfort.
What are the normal activities after the procedure?
You MUST have someone drive you home from the retrieval. Plan to rest and sleep for the remainder of the day. Take it easy for a few days afterward, and follow any specific post-op instructions from your doctor.
What do you feel after the retreival?
It's common to feel bloated and a little sore, as your ovaries will be enlarged from the stimulation.
Do you feel any pain during the retreival?
Some IVF centers use general anesthesia, and some centers use local sedation. Either way, you are very relaxed. You may feel some discomfort, but you should not be in pain.
How are the eggs retrieved?
The doctor uses a transvaginal ultrasound to guide a very thin needle through the vaginal wall and into the ovarian follicles to gently retrieve the eggs.
What is poor response?
A poor response generally means that fewer than four follicles have developed in response to the medication.
Can a donor not produce enough eggs in a stimulated cycle?
Yes, if your body doesn't respond well to the medication, the doctor may cancel the cycle. In the case of a canceled cycle for poor response, the donor will still be compensated between $650.00-$750.00 for her time and commitment.
If you retrieve 15 eggs will I reach menopause early?
No. Every month, your body naturally develops many follicles, but only one or two typically mature and ovulate. Fertility medication simply stimulates the other follicles that would have dissolved to also grow and mature. This process does not deplete your overall egg reserve.
How many eggs are removed during the retrieval?
The average is 10 to 15 eggs per cycle, but it's not uncommon for donors to produce 16 or more eggs.
How do I administer the required injections?
Always consult with your medical provider first. Freedom MedTEACH provides educational videos that demonstrate how to administer most fertility medication.
How many eggs is it normal for a woman to have?
You are born with approximately 2 million eggs. By the time you reach puberty you have approximately 200,000 eggs remaining.
